I’ve been MIA on the blog (per usual), but I wanted to drop in to let you guys know of an exciting collaboration I’ve been working on. A few months ago I was asked if I would produce a style and decor segment for the Delmarva Almanac’s radio show on Delmarva Public Radio. Of course I said yes, and my first piece aired today! I decided to also do a blog post of the tips/DIYs I share on the segments in case you are more of a visual leaner like I am. On todays segment I talked about 5 ways you can bring the outdoors in with natural elements you can find in your own backyard. Below are a few examples of the DIY’s I mentioned. You can listen to the segment here (my part begins about 15mins in)
1. Spring blooms: Beautiful buds are blooming everywhere. Create a charming and simple flower arrangement by picking wildflowers and native plants and placing them in individual glass bottles.
2. Fallen branches: Branches are very sculptural, so they can add lots of interest to a boring space. If you love a rustic look, find a branch slightly longer than your window frame and hang with brackets for a DIY curtain rod.
3. Deer Antlers: Be on the lookout for deer antlers the next time you’re taking a walk through the woods. Bucks tend to shed their antlers between January and April, so you may be able to still find a few. Place them amidst a gallery or picture wall, or have the antlers function as a coat rack. You can paint the tips a metallic or bright color for a nice juxtaposition between masculine and feminine.
4. Beach Treasures: Don’t know what to do with the hundreds of seashells your kids collect at the beach? Display your beach treasures in a terrarium with succulents or a decorative bell jar.
5. Take a pic: Taking pictures of nature is one of the best ways to bring the outdoors in because not only does that picture serve as decor, but it can also tell a story. If you’re just starting out, try taking pictures of a sunset, flowers, or ocean– their natural beauty makes it pretty much fail proof, and is a great way to incorporate more color into your home.
Be sure to tune in to the Delmarva Almanac on Delmarva Public Radio every Saturday at 3:30pm on WSCL 89.5fm & Wednesday at 6:30pm on WSDL 90.7fm or online at www.delmarvapublicradio.net/programs/delmarva-almanac. Because it is a regional show, all the topics will have a local appeal (which you already know I’m all about highlighting how great the Eastern Shore is). So if you’re a local reader and have any ideas or suggestions on style or decor topics you would like me to talk about feel free to leave a comment below. Thanks for reading and listening!
